Purpose of the job
- The Technical Production supervisor oversees the manufacturing plant operators and assistants.
- Monitors the progress of various jobs and ensures that work is done according to the Health & Safety regulations, on time, within budget and to the right quality standards.
- Ensures smooth operations of production.
- Provide maintenance support during shift.
- Ensure that health and safety requirements are met.
Key areas of responsibility
Duties and responsibilities:
Production
- Ensuring manufacturing plants operates at maximum capacity whilst maintaining product quality.
- Maintain applicable SOP’s
- Challenging SOP’s and suggest changes to the benefit of the business.
- Keeping the site clean and safe.
- Completing and submitting of batch process sheets in time.
- Ensure all operators are trained on the latest revision of the SOP’s.
Maintenance
- Daily plant checks, spares management and preventative maintenance in mechanical / electrical / C&I fields to ensure maximum plant availability.
- Breakdown Maintenance.
- Complete job cards and Statutory Schedules.
- Maintain standards in the plant and adhere to all safety rules and procedures.
- Must be flexible to perform multi-skilled duties and work shifts.
HSE
- To familiarize yourself with the requirements of the Act and applicable Regulations.
- To ensure that you comply with these requirements in the workplace.
- To ensure that each member of staff is adequately qualified and trained to perform their work in a safe and healthy manner.
- To ensure that all accidents and incidents are reported and properly investigated by trained persons who have been designated to perform this task.
HR
- Ensure that all subordinates’ files are up to date with important information.
- Planning and confirming with the production manager their holiday schedule in advance.
- Managing & controlling challenges on their own to maintain discipline.
- Managing their teams to effectively run the manufacturing processes.

Working-in & building teams
- Daily meetings with teams-planning and setting out work.
- Daily meetings with teams-conveying information from management.
- Daily meetings with teams-toolbox talks, SOP’s, Policies, etc.
- Daily meetings with Production manager to plan and execute production.
- Liaising with the technical departments on the status of the manufacturing plants.
Reporting
- Planning and controlling staff time schedules.
- Planning and handling in overtime for processing.
- Working closely with production manager on info needed for plant performance reports.
- Compile shift reports for completed shift.
Roles and responsibilities
- Maintaining roles & responsibilities at the right level and / person.
- Taking accountability for manufacturing plant.
Communication
- Being open and honest at all times.
- Reporting incidents or significant news immediately to the production manager and maintenance manager.
Stock in – Product out
- Liaising with production manager, warehouse manager to plan stock movement well in advance.
- Liaising with production manager, warehouse manager to plan and execute production.
- Daily stock control when on shift.
- Complete batch sheets timeously and accurately.
Other duties in terms of legal appointments:
- Executing duties assigned to the individual in terms of other legal appointments that the employer may require, which may include but not limited to specific appointments, such as First Aider, Fire fighter, Preparedness co-ordinator, etc.
Knowledge and skills needed
Education:
- Trade relevant N3 / Matric with Mathematics and Science and a valid Millwright Trade Certificate.
- Production management course
- Supervisory management course
Related Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years’ Experience in different pumps, valves, cylinders and pneumatic drives are required.
- A minimum of 5 years’ Experience in electrical work e.g. MCC components, electrical motors and solenoids.
- Previous Production management will be preferred
- Skills: Demonstrate strong problem solving skills, leadership ability and high tolerance for pressure
- Be self-motivated and able to work independently
- Good communication skills
- Report writing
- Other: Previous experience with Allen Bradley PLC’s and HMI’s will be advantages.
- Previous experience in chemical processes will be advantages.
